A spec-led head-to-head of the two best-selling connected scales, with an honest, cited answer on what body-fat readings are actually worth. Prices checked on 13 October 2026.
The two best-selling smart scales on Amazon are also the two we list in our wearables and trackers category: the Withings Body Smart at $129.95 and the RENPHO Elis 1 at about $25. This comparison uses published specifications from withings.com and renpho.com, checked on 13 October 2026, plus peer-reviewed research on what these scales can and cannot measure. We have not lab-tested either scale ourselves. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases made through the links on this page.
Both scales measure weight accurately — that part of the technology is solved. Buy the Withings Body Smart if you will weigh in daily and want the friction gone: Wi-Fi syncs your weight without your phone, the colour screen shows trends on the scale, and it recognizes up to eight family members automatically. Buy the RENPHO Elis 1 if you want the same core function — accurate weight, tracked over time in a free app — for a fifth of the price, and you don't mind having your phone nearby at weigh-in. For both: treat the body-fat percentage as a rough trend line, not a measurement.

The hardware gap is mostly convenience, not measurement quality: Withings removes the phone from your morning routine and adds a nicer screen and smarter household handling. RENPHO covers the fundamentals completely for about $25, and backs the scale with an 18-month warranty and a 30-day money-back window, per its own store.
Weight, full stop — and that is more valuable than it sounds. In a 2021 study published in JMIR mHealth and uHealth, researchers at a French tertiary hospital compared three consumer smart scales (including a Withings model) against DEXA, the clinical reference. Weight was accurate: the median absolute error was under 0.3 kg for all three scales. The same literature notes that in randomized weight-management studies, people using connected scales tended to lose more weight than control groups — the daily feedback loop is the feature, not any single number. The habit works best when the measurement conditions are identical: same scale, same spot on a hard floor, same time of morning, before food and coffee. Day-to-day readings will still swing by a kilogram or more with water and glycogen, which is why the weekly average is the number to watch. If body composition matters to your training, pair scale trends with functional markers that respond clearly to training, like grip strength — our Grip Strength Protocol covers testing it at home — and the gear in our fitness and mobility category.
Every smart scale's body-fat percentage comes from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA): a tiny, imperceptible current passes foot to foot, and an algorithm extrapolates whole-body composition from the result. In the same JMIR study, fat-mass estimates from the three scales missed the DEXA reading by a median of 2.2 to 4.4 kg, and the authors' conclusion is blunt: smart scales are not accurate for body composition and should not replace DEXA in patient care. Foot-to-foot BIA is also sensitive to hydration, foot placement and recent meals. The practical rule: the number is fine as a personal trend line measured under consistent conditions (same time of day, same hydration state), and misleading as an absolute. This applies equally to the $25 RENPHO and the $130 Withings; Withings' multi-frequency approach is a genuine refinement, but it does not repeal the physics. One safety note: anyone with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker should not use BIA features at all — both scales can be used in weight-only mode.
Living with the Withings means stepping on the scale and doing nothing else: it syncs over Wi-Fi on its own, greets you by name in a multi-user household, and shows your trend on its colour screen. Modes for babies, athletes and pregnancy are built in, and an Eyes-Closed mode hides numbers entirely, showing only trends — a thoughtful option for anyone whose relationship with the scale is complicated. The app is free with unlimited storage; an optional Withings+ subscription adds programs and deeper analysis. Living with the RENPHO means opening the app (or having your phone near) so the scale can sync over Bluetooth, then getting 13 metrics, goal tracking and unlimited users in a free app that also feeds Apple Health, Fitbit and others. It is simpler and completely adequate — millions of units sold adequate.
Neither brand operates a Thai direct store with local warranty, so the practical route is the Amazon.com listings linked on this page: delivery, returns and any Thai import VAT or duties are set by Amazon and its sellers. The good news: scales are simple imports — no region-locked apps, no subscriptions that depend on your country, and no voltage issues since both run on AAA batteries. Both apps work normally on iOS and Android in Thailand.
Either way, the winning move is the same: weigh at the same time daily, watch the weekly trend, and let the body-fat number be a direction, not a verdict.
Not for absolute numbers. A 2021 study in JMIR mHealth and uHealth that tested three consumer smart scales against DEXA scans found weight was accurate (median error under 0.3 kg) but fat mass was off by 2.2 to 4.4 kg. The study's conclusion: smart scales should not replace DEXA for body composition. Use the body-fat number as a trend line, not a measurement.
It depends on what you are paying for. The Withings premium buys Wi-Fi auto-sync (no phone needed at weigh-in), a colour screen, multi-frequency BIA, standing heart rate, eight-user auto-recognition and a polished app. The RENPHO measures the same core thing — weight — accurately, and syncs over Bluetooth with your phone nearby. If you weigh in daily and hate opening an app first, Withings earns its price; if not, RENPHO is the rational buy.
Both display your weight on the scale itself with no app open. Everything beyond weight — body composition estimates, trends, history — lives in the companion app: the free Withings app for Body Smart and the free RENPHO Health app for the Elis 1.
No. The RENPHO Health app is free, with no required subscription for the 13 tracked metrics, as of October 2026. Withings' core app is also free; it sells an optional Withings+ subscription for extra programs and analysis.
Yes. The Withings Body Smart automatically recognizes up to 8 users, and the RENPHO Elis 1 supports multiple users through the app. Households are a standard use case for both.
Anyone with an implanted electronic medical device, such as a pacemaker, should not use bioelectrical impedance features — manufacturers advise against it, and both scales let you weigh with body composition turned off. Weight-only mode is unaffected. If you are pregnant or have a medical condition, ask your doctor first; Withings offers a pregnancy mode that handles this.
Both scales are listed in our wearables and trackers category. For the training side of the equation, see the Grip Strength Protocol and our fitness and mobility category.
